Endorsement from Assemblymember David Chiu!

“This year, Sonja impressed me as an organizer working to help pass a historic package of state housing bills I championed with fellow California legislators to address the crisis. I saw firsthand Sonja’s appreciation for the details of sound, practical policy, her understanding of the advocacy needed to overcome political obstacles, her ethics and her values.”

IMG_20171202_081503_707.jpgI first met Sonja Trauss as an activist working passionately to provide affordable housing for everyone who considers the Bay Area home. Our housing crisis has worsened in part from a failure of community to get to yes, and Sonja played an integral role in building the nationally recognized Yes in My Back Yard (Yimby) movement.

This year, Sonja impressed me as an organizer working to help pass a historic package of state housing bills I championed with fellow California legislators to address the crisis. I saw firsthand Sonja’s appreciation for the details of sound, practical policy, her understanding of the advocacy needed to overcome political obstacles, her ethics and her values.

This summer, Sonja asked me about a local law I passed in 2012 that established a pilot program to provide tenants facingevictions with the Right to Civil Counsel. I learned that one of Sonja’s first jobs was in Legal Services, helping defend low income homeowners against big banks seeking to foreclose on their mortgages and take their homes. Thanks to Sonja’s advocacy, I worked with Supervisors Jeff Sheehy and London Breed to introduce legislation to make permanent and fully fund the Right to Civil Counsel in San Francisco.

Sonja is running for Supervisor to represent the good residents of District 6. Today, I am happy to endorse her candidacy. I hope you will join Sonja’s campaign too..

Sonja is already doing the work and making a difference for the people of District 6, combating homelessness, creating more affordable housing, protecting tenants’ rights, advocating for pedestrians and bicyclists to create safe streets, and exploring policies to reduce commercial vacancies that will provide residents a mix of local serving businesses.

I’m proud to join Senator Scott Wiener, Board of Equalization Member Fiona Ma, former Supervisor Angela Alioto and Yimby Action in endorsing Sonja.

Join all of us today in supporting Sonja Trauss for District 6 Supervisor.
